Governor Wes Moore Endorses Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive

For Immediate Release June 5, 2026

SILVER SPRING — Governor Wes Moore today endorsed Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive, throwing the support of Maryland’s chief executive behind Jawando in the final weeks of a competitive Democratic primary. Voters head to the polls on June 23.

“We have delivered enormous progress for the people of Maryland since taking office, but there is still more work to do, and Will Jawando is a leader who will help us finish the job in Montgomery County,” said Governor Wes Moore. “In order to continue record drops in violent crime, keep lowering costs for Maryland families, and make our schools even stronger I need a team that will push back and push forward to build a Maryland that leaves no one behind. Together with Will, we will work day and night alongside one another to continue the progress we’ve seen in Montgomery County and throughout Maryland.”

“I am so proud to be endorsed by Governor Wes Moore,” said Councilmember Will Jawando. “Montgomery County families deserve a County Executive and a Governor who will work together to lower costs, strengthen our schools, and build a county where the neighborhood you grow up in does not decide how far you go.”

The endorsement lands as Jawando enters the closing days of the race with momentum and a growing coalition, and as outside money pours in to oppose him. He announced on Monday at an event with Senator Angela Alsobrooks that he was the first campaign for County Executive to max out public financing. On Tuesday, he released a poll showing him tied for first place even as a developer-backed super PAC has raised $1.3 million in Montgomery County in an effort to lie about his record.

“We cannot outspend them, but we can outwork them,” said Jawando. “This campaign is accountable to the people of Montgomery County, and no one else.”

Jawando’s labor coalition is led by the Montgomery County Education Association, whose Apple Ballot is one of the most influential endorsements in county primaries, and the Metro DC AFL-CIO. It also includes AFGE District 14, SEIU Local 500, 1199SEIU MD/DC, 32BJ SEIU, AFSCME Maryland, ATU Local 689, IUPAT District Council 51, LiUNA, the Philadelphia/Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council, SMART, and the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters.

Other organizations supporting Jawando include CASA in Action, the Jews United for Justice Campaign Fund, Progressive Maryland, the Working Families Party, the Collective PAC, Our Revolution, the Latino Democratic Club of Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Muslim Council, NAPAC-DMV, and the United Nigerian Americans Council of Maryland.

Jawando’s elected endorsers span every level of government. At the federal level, U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks and Congressman Kweisi Mfume. At the state level, Maryland State Treasurer Dereck Davis, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jheanelle Wilkins, and Delegate Pam Queen. At the county level, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmembers Kristin Mink and Shebra Evans, and Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy. At the municipal level, Somerset Mayor Rohit Khanna, Rockville City Councilmember Izola Shaw, Somerset Councilmember Debbie Heller, and Friendship Heights Village officials John Conlow and Francine Klein.

Former officials backing the campaign include former U.S. Attorney Erek Barron, former Councilmembers Valerie Ervin and Nancy Navarro, and former Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin.
