Statement on the Introduction of the Trust Act

Councilmember Will Jawando announced sponsorship of the Trust Act alongside Council President Natali Fani-González and other councilmembers. County Executive Marc Elrich and Police Chief Marc Yamada joined the announcement with students, community, and nonprofit leaders present.

The legislation codifies existing county policies by prohibiting discriminatory practices against immigrants, ensuring county benefits and services reach all residents regardless of immigration status, and protecting resident privacy from federal enforcement overreach.

“As the son of a Nigerian immigrant, this is personal to me. My father came to this country believing America would judge him by his character, not his birthplace.”

— Councilmember Will Jawando

“We are witnessing an administration where cruelty is the point — families torn apart, neighbors living in fear. Montgomery County will not be compliant.”

— Councilmember Will Jawando
