SILVER SPRING, MD — The Sierra Club today endorsed Councilmember Will Jawando, the Democratic nominee for Montgomery County Executive, ahead of the November 3 general election.
“As a father of four, I think every day about the world we’re leaving behind for our kids. The Sierra Club and I share the same mission: protect our green spaces, accelerate the transition to clean energy, and keep equity at the center of everything Montgomery County does on climate.”
The endorsement recognizes Jawando’s record of environmental leadership on the County Council, including co-leading passage of Maryland’s first comprehensive building decarbonization law, securing strong no-net-loss forest conservation policies, supporting Green Bank funding, and streamlining solar energy permitting through SolarAPP+. He also led the successful push for a moratorium on new data center development, requiring the county to weigh energy, water, and ratepayer impacts before additional projects move forward.
As County Executive, Jawando will continue protecting green spaces from overdevelopment, strengthen stormwater management to mitigate flooding in vulnerable areas, invest in bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and ensure climate action centers equity so that both the benefits and burdens of the clean energy transition are fairly distributed.
