Montgomery County Council — Councilmember Will Jawando released a statement responding to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Learning Resources v. Trump, which struck down the president’s authority to impose global tariffs without congressional approval.
“This ruling is a necessary and firm check on a president who consistently treats our Constitution as an obstacle rather than a mandate. It is a vital step in reining in an executive branch that views the rule of law as a suggestion.”
— Will Jawando
Jawando highlighted the economic toll of the tariffs on Montgomery County families, calling them “a regressive tax on every day life” that raised costs for groceries, school supplies, and household essentials. He also pointed to the impact on local infrastructure, noting that rising steel and wiring costs reduced what tax dollars could purchase for the county.
The statement also addressed the administration’s broader actions, referencing masked federal agents targeting immigrants, the dismantling of the Department of Education, and what Jawando called “a systemic assault on our institutions.” He urged the Court to remain vigilant against discriminatory enforcement while pledging continued advocacy for community protection and progress.
