Congressman Kweisi Mfume Endorses Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive

Civil rights icon and former NAACP President backs Jawando’s people-powered campaign

Montgomery County, MD — Congressman Kweisi Mfume, a civil rights leader and former President of the NAACP, today endorsed Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive.

“Will Jawando is and has been a dedicated, experienced and consistent fighter for the people of Montgomery County. That’s why I endorse and wholeheartedly support him to become the next County Executive,” said Congressman Mfume. “Will is a progressive advocate who brings people together around the important issues that matter, and his work on behalf of communities, seniors and working families is making a real difference in the lives of County residents every day.”

Congressman Mfume represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District from 1987 to 1996 before serving as President and CEO of the NAACP from 1996 to 2004. He returned to Congress in 2020 and continues to serve as a leading voice for civil rights and social justice.

“From the NAACP to the halls of Congress, Congressman Mfume has spent his life fighting for justice and opportunity,” said Councilmember Will Jawando. “To have his support means the world to me. Like Congressman Mfume, I believe that real change comes when we bring people together and fight for what’s right. As County Executive, I’ll carry that same commitment to standing up for working families, seniors, and every community across Montgomery County.”

Congressman Mfume joins a growing coalition of supporters including Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), CASA in Action, Progressive Maryland, Working Families Party, and LiUNA, along with County Executive Marc Elrich, Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy, and others.
