Maryland Matters reported on At-Large Councilmember Will Jawando’s announcement that he will run for Montgomery County Executive, seeking to replace term-limited County Executive Marc Elrich. More than 200 supporters packed Citizens and Culture in Silver Spring for the launch, where Elrich publicly endorsed Jawando’s candidacy.
“I promise to fix your potholes in your neighborhood. I know that’s a problem. When you have good streets, you have good commerce, and you have good safety.”
— Will Jawando
Jawando laid out a vision centered on rent stabilization and affordable housing, continued investment in public schools, and support for small businesses. A civil rights attorney who previously served in the Obama White House and worked in the U.S. Senate for then-Sen. Barack Obama and former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Jawando is the first Nigerian-American elected to the Montgomery County Council, where he serves as Vice President. Elrich praised Jawando’s fighting spirit, saying, “People need to know you’re going to fight… That’s one of the things that I like about Will.”
