People-powered campaign overcomes nearly $2 million in negative outside spending to win by the widest margin in an open county executive primary in nearly two decades

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — The Montgomery County Board of Elections today certified the results of the June 23 Democratic primary, making Councilmember Will Jawando the official Democratic nominee for County Executive. Jawando won with 40.15 percent of the vote and 52,738 votes in a five-way field, the widest margin of victory in an open county executive primary in nearly two decades.

“I’m honored to be the Democratic nominee for Montgomery County Executive, and I’m ready to fight every single day for every resident of this county. I’m deeply grateful to Governor Wes Moore, Senator Angela Alsobrooks and the over 40 organizations who believed in our vision and for standing with us. Now the real work begins, and together, we’re going to deliver for every single person who calls Montgomery County home,” said Will Jawando.

Jawando ran through the county’s public financing system, powered by small-dollar contributions from county residents. He was outspent roughly four to one as outside groups poured nearly $2 million in negative ads into the primary, most of it aimed at defeating him. Voters in every part of the county answered with the largest vote total of any candidate on the ballot.

Jawando ran on fully funding public schools, building housing families can afford, and growing the economy from the bottom up. He advances to the November 3 general election.
