On January 31, 2026, Will Jawando sat down virtually with former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn for a conversation on Defending Democracy.
Five years ago, Harry defended the U.S. Capitol from a violent insurrection that sought to overturn the will of the people. He was beaten with clubs and baseball bats, sprayed with bear spray, and called slurs. He did it because his job was to defend the Capitol and the people inside. He did it because democracy is worth defending.
Today, that fight continues.
In just the past few weeks, we’ve seen escalating attacks on democracy and on the people who make it work. From aggressive ICE actions to the continued disregard for democratic norms coming from the Trump administration and its allies. Our democracy is being tested, and it’s on all of us to defend it.
That’s why leaders like Will Jawando matter. Will has devoted his life to public service. He had Harry’s back and supported him when he needed it, and Harry is proud to show up for Will. Just last week, Will introduced legislation to ban face coverings for law enforcement and co-sponsored a bill to restrict ICE access to county buildings. These are real steps toward accountability and justice.
