The Banner: Montgomery County Teachers Union Throws Its Weight Behind Will Jawando

The Baltimore Banner reported on the Montgomery County Education Association’s endorsement of Council Vice President Will Jawando in the race for county executive, a significant boost that brings the backing of 14,000 teachers across more than 200 schools along with the name recognition and campaign resources of the union’s Apple Ballot.

“They’ve invested in our students and we have to keep investing in them. As county executive, MCEA will always have a partner in my office.”

— Will Jawando

Jawando, who positions himself as the most progressive candidate in the race to replace outgoing County Executive Marc Elrich, has championed education funding throughout his tenure on the council, including a proposal in May for a 0.1% income tax increase dedicated to education. He also advocates for income tax increases on those earning over $1 million. Jawando uses public campaign financing and has received the endorsement of Elrich himself.
