Statement on the Attainable Housing Strategies Initiative

Statement on the Attainable Housing Strategies Initiative

Council Vice President Will Jawando expressed concerns about the Planning Board’s Attainable Housing Strategies Initiative (AHSI), which proposes broader zoning reforms than his original 2020 proposal.

“I believe we should pause consideration of these recommendations and refocus on meeting the needs of our current and future residents with affordable housing.”

— Council Vice President Will Jawando

Jawando cited three main reasons for pausing consideration:

  1. Community concerns about impacts on schools, infrastructure, and utilities
  2. Questions whether “attainable” housing will genuinely address affordability versus incentivizing developer profits
  3. Economic uncertainty from potential federal employment changes

Jawando reaffirmed his commitment to expanding housing but emphasized the need for community input and targeted approaches that prioritize working families, teachers, and essential workers.
