AFGE District 14 Endorses Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive

Nation’s largest federal employee union backs Will Jawando as a proven fighter for working people amidst federal workforce cuts

Silver Spring, MD — The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) District 14, which represents federal workers across the Washington metro region including Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, today endorsed Will Jawando for Montgomery County Executive.

“We are proud to endorse Will Jawando to be the next Montgomery County Executive. Over the years, he has been on the frontlines fighting for workers. He worked to ensure employees were helped and coordinated critical aid for furloughed workers during layoffs. Will understands the challenges facing working people and has worked tirelessly to make sure workers are respected and protected,” said National Vice President Ottis Johnson, Jr. of AFGE District 14.

Montgomery County is home to approximately 77,000 federal employees, one of the highest concentrations of any county in the nation. As the Trump administration has moved to slash the federal workforce, thousands of county residents have faced layoffs, furloughs, and deep uncertainty about their futures. AFGE is the largest union for civilian, non-postal federal employees in the country, representing more than 820,000 workers nationwide and, through District 14, thousands directly in the Montgomery County community.

“Federal workers are our neighbors, our friends, the people who make our country run,” said Councilmember Will Jawando. “They keep our labs open, our veterans cared for, and our communities safe. When this federal administration came after them, I fought back. That’s what I’ll do as County Executive every single day. I am honored to have the support of AFGE and proud to stand with all federal workers, retirees and their families in Montgomery County.”

On the Council, Jawando has been a consistent advocate for federal employees impacted by budget cuts and workforce reductions, helping coordinate aid for furloughed workers and championing legislation to give displaced federal workers preferential hiring consideration for county jobs.

AFGE joins a growing coalition of labor and community endorsers including Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), CASA in Action, Progressive Maryland, Working Families Party, LiUNA, County Executive Marc Elrich, and Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy, and more.
