Prosperity:
Ensure Housing for All

“Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid.”
— Micah 4:4

The Issue

The American Dream is unreachable without the promise of a safe, secure home. Yet for too many, this dream is out of reach. All people deserve decent, stable housing. The fundamental right to safe, secure, and adequate housing remains an unshakable pillar of human dignity. Prices have skyrocketed and people are being squeezed out of their homes and long-time neighborhoods. Institutional investors are increasingly purchasing housing across our country and pricing out locals. Investment brokers and real estate executives have decided to put their profit motives over the well-being of their communities, and we need to rein them in fast.

What I’ve Done So Far

One of my proudest moments on the County Council was the passage of permanent rent stabilization — the first of its kind in the state of Maryland. The 6% cap on rent increases is a monumental step in ensuring that residents of Montgomery County are not forced out of their homes simply because of unfair rent hikes.

What I Will Do in the Senate

  • Owning a home is a cornerstone of the American dream. I'm committed to supporting legislation that makes a pathway to homeownership for all families. Together, we can promote financial stability and foster generational wealth for every American.

  • While in the U.S. Senate, I commit to always strive towards housing for all. I will introduce legislation that incentivizes local communities to enact rental stabilization programs through federal subsidies and grants. Because renters deserve protection as much as homeowners, it’s time we take action to keep everyone in their homes.

  • I will also support legislation that expands housing voucher programs nationwide to allow more Americans to pay their rent without the undue stress of eviction and homelessness.

  • We must massively increase our national investment in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

  • The epidemic of homelessness for unhoused people in America is unacceptable and a moral failing. In a nation like ours, we have the collective resources to ensure that no person falls victim to homelessness. As your Senator, I will cosponsor the Housing is a Human Right Act.

  • With an increase in the number of large institutional owners in the single-family rental (SFR) market, policymakers have started to think about the impacts that such owners may have on rental affordability, the housing stock available for purchase, and tenant stability, among other issues, particularly for households with lower incomes and households of color.

  • I support efforts by Democrats in Congress to rein in private equity and increase oversight over the wealthy investors buying up housing.
