Prosperity:
Elevate Public Education

“Education is the single most important civil rights issue that we face today. We simply cannot afford to lose out on the potential of even one young person."
— Former First Lady Michelle Obama

The Issue

The promise of education is essential for shaping futures, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring the health of our democracy. Yet from chronic underfunding to gun violence and revisionist history, our public education system faces numerous challenges. Persistent funding disparities and teacher shortages exacerbate these issues, leaving marginalized communities at a disadvantage. We are responsible for ensuring every child is set up for success because a strong public education system uplifts individuals and strengthens our communities.

What I’ve Done So Far

I am a lifelong advocate for public education, from my role as a senior advisor on education policy in the Obama Administration to my leadership as Chair of the Montgomery County Council's Education and Culture Committee. My record shows a dedication to equity and excellence, from securing essential school funding to fostering programs that drive STEM education and offer genuine career experiences to our youth. In the face of rising anti-education sentiments, you can count on me to continue standing up for the inclusive, equitable, and safe education every student deserves.

What I Will Do in the Senate

  • Equality in education isn't just about access—it's about equity, ensuring every child receives resources tailored to their needs. From our rural towns to bustling cities, from children with disabilities to those learning English as a second language, our commitment must be unwavering: to provide an education that acknowledges and celebrates each student's unique strengths and challenges.

  • Approximately 90% of a child's brain development occurs before age five. These earliest years are often the most important for shaping the hearts and minds of our young people. Unfortunately, we have a patchwork system of early childhood education. I will fight for universal Pre-K so that every child begins their journey with the tools, support, and nurturing environment they need to thrive.

  • No American should have to pick between caring for their children or being able to go to work. I will fight tooth and nail to expand access to affordable childcare to every American family, offer high-quality early education to every child, and create good jobs for our early educators.

  • I will defend teachers' unions in the Senate, as they are one of the most important backbones of our national education system, and ensure that our educators are well treated.
